Since passing my driving test two years ago, I've racked up quite a few miles in my car. I love the freedom that it gives you, and your car can almost become your second home. I've been on many road trips, such as a drive to the beach, alton towers, york etc. The journey is one of the best parts about the day, and where strangely a lot of funny things happen.
At times, I still find myself a nervous driver. I don't like parking because I get scared of hitting something or another car. I don't think I'm a bad driver though. There are some really terrible ones out there, a few have often made me swerve a crash. Although there are bad drivers of all ages, the people who've been a problem to me are the older population. I'm sure there are some really responsible older drivers, but I think that some of them have forgotten how to drive. They often ignore the speed limits (especially drivers with huge cars, like Audis or what ever) and don't understand the rules of the road, such as keep clear areas. A person I know supports this, as she didn't understand what it meant until I told her. Some people tend to think that they own the road. Truth be told, you don't. You're a danger to me and to other people. Nothing irritates me more than people up your backside when you're driving at the speed limit. I usually can't decide whether to slow down and annoy them, or speed up to move away.
What ever the government put in force to try and tackle road issues, there will always be people who object and refuse to listen. Here's my idea. When people reach a certain age, I think that they should have to have a driving lesson. The tutor will assess the person's driving, and if they are safe then they're still allowed to drive. If there are problems however, I think that people should receive driving lessons or even have to retake their driving test. Obviously people will hate this idea, but it's a way which could reduce disasters on the road. The government would also love it, since they'd be getting money from drivers re-taking their tests. I'm not really sure what could be done with problematic younger drivers, but if they're terrible then they shouldn't have passed in the first place.
On another note, my little car passed it's first MOT today. I can't be that much of a bad driver after all. :)

It's interesting to hear that because most people only talk about how much of a danger younger drivers are! It works both ways, with speed as well as age. Often the people who cruise along going ten miles below the limit in perfect weather tend to be older drivers, which can be just as dangerous as going ten miles over. I also don't understand why people brake for speed cameras when they're already that far below the limit!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear that your car passed its MOT though :)
Yep! There's both young and old problematic drivers. Something needs to be done about it, but nothing ever gets accomplished.
